Gday Guys, a friend of mine works at a nursery and often he'll call me up and tell me that they are chucking out a bunch of trees and if I get there in the next few hrs I can have my pick. They usually chop them off a foot from the bottom to stop the garbage man from selling them.

This tree was one of the chuckouts. A 10 year old cherry blossom (by my amateurish ring count) which was rootbound. Out of the pot, this tree was just a pole as you can see...But after a couple of hrs of bare rooting in my garage (which is what I secretly do on a saturday night after the wife has gone to bed!), this is what I discover under the soil.. Let me know what you think. Also any special comments on Cherry care would be great.

when i first read that title i ducked for cover for you

but then i was nicely surprised to see what you had done. basal flare and movement is where it all starts from. many useless pieces of crap could be turned into something good or maybe even great if this procedure was to be followed. taking it down to the start well done webos i look forward to seeing what you do with it.

That's a great find!

By the looks of it, this was one of those 'standard' cherries with the weeping top stock, in which case the blossoms may not be spectacular. However, the stock you are working with should be a strong grower. It would be interesting if you could find out exactly what variety of Cherry the rootstock is.

I like your treatment of it so far, and that basal flare will be quite an asset. My only concern is that the remnants of your 'pole' seems to be poking more or less straight upwards, but as new branches and leaders present themselves you should get some ideas about leaning the lower trunk over (assuming you are after an Informal Upright style).

Can plant it slightly off the vertical to get some movement down the bottom before it regrows?

Thanks Watto for the kick in the backside to give you an update... The most recent Photo I've taken is this one. As you can see, very healthy, shoots all over it and growing fast. Will try to take a better photo tomorrow

With no offence to the Artist, Webos, I believe, with just a tad of luck, your cherry will be sooooooooo much nicer than this one.
Now how about that update then?
