Hi to all...I'm planning to head down to the National Gallery in the near future. From those of you that have already been I'd love it if you could share your thoughts...What should I be expecting...? Thinking I'll take the wife down to show her what is possible, she's not really a bonsai enthusiast but hoping that this will help her understand why I spend so much time with my trees. Will probably make a day of it so if there are any other options (places to go & see) of what to do in the area- all suggestions welcome. Are you aloud to take photos of bonsai at the gallery or is this strictly forbidden...?

That's right BF. If you end up at the National Gallery you will be showing the good lady paintings and other artworks.
For bonsai go to the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia which is part of the National Arboretum. Some really great trees on display every day.
After looking at the bonsai take a walk or drive through the arboretum. Lots of 'forests' of notable trees from around the world, some of which we use as bonsai and many others of special significance. Most of the trees are still quite young but some are already getting big and there are the 2 forests (cork oak and Himalayan cedar) that were planted nearly 100 years ago to show what the rest of the arboretum might look like in the future.
Botanic gardens is well worth a visit. Up to Black mountain and the telstra tower for a look over the city. Parliament house is interesting then there's the High court, National Library National Gallery, Old parliament house and Questacon quite close together. See how our coins are made at the Mint or if military history interests you head across the lake to the War Memorial. National Film and Sound Archive has some interesting stuff on show too. Lots more as well.
Plenty of things to see and do if you have the time but do get to the bonsai collection.

I took my girlfriend who is not a enthusiast and she still enjoyed the time Arboretum. The display is great to look at and the actual Arboretum is very well set up. We had our morning coffee in the café and sat looking out at the view. We didn't get a chance to play on the playground but it looked like fun. We even got to see Costa from Gardening Australia.
The National Gallery was good too.

Shibui & Peter H...Well yes I really got it all mixed up didn't I...

Shibui thanks for all of the options of places to go & see...Although I think to see all, I'll have to make a weekend of it instead of just a day trip. Are photo's of the Bonsai & Penging collection permitted...? I'd love to get a few inspirational pics if possible...

Hi
We welcome photography of the trees. We love people to share their photos, it all helps to promote bonsai and penjing, and of course our National Collection.
Regards
Leigh

Thanks Leigh...I'm really exited to come down and see the collection as soon as possible. Taking some memorabilia home in the way of photos & happy snaps would be great. Have spoken to wifey and she doesn't want to do a weekend away so that just means "Hooray" for me...!!! I'll make it a day trip & spend as much time as I can at my own leisure...That is without the ..."Can we go Now"... "No honey we only just got here"... Ha Ha
