After picking up my Akadama the other day, I went home inspired to work on a tree which a few years ago got a bug and started to die back a bit. I managed to kill the bug but left it to itself to recover and then forgot about it so it became more of a hedge than a nicely styled tree.
Im not the photographer that many of you are but here are some photos of one of my first trees bought as a 3 inch starter from Korreshoff in 1992 which will hopefully now fill out and show off a nice graceful trunk.
I used the Akadama, so fingers crossed, the only thing I have done differently to Bretts instructions was to include some Dynamic Lifter throughout the mix.

hey mate, thats a lot of trimming, you couldnt have kept some on to define pades? or you had to start from scratch

Problem was it was all pretty stringy underneath.
There was plenty of foliage on the outside but nothing underneath really, so as soon as I pruned the outer foliage there was nothing left but thin little branches.
I had to take a deep breath and now I am praying it all comes back in the right place.
There are little buds in the right places so I should be ok.
Time will tell.

time will definately tell mate. hope all goes well for you with it, the little branches should help with development if the buds break. best of luck with it anyway. it will have good structure once it redevelops.

A year on and this one is powering on again. It is starting to look how I intended. Need to pinch it back now and develop some more defined pads.

One issue Im not 100% on is the nebari. I was thinking I might wrap the base with some Alcore and back fill with some mix. AKA Grants root wrap technique.
Interested to hear if Grant thinks this might work so that some of the gaps in the roots will fill in.
