Hey everybody,
i was just wondering if anyone had any advice on trident maple cuttings because i just cut some of one of my trees and i just stick all the left overs in a pot. Thanx

have you got rooting hormone? can help.
other wise the medium you use will have a great impact, obviously a heavy clay like soil wil make it hard for them to break throught with roots.
clean cuts and even scraping back to cambium layers has helped me before.
keep them in the shade for a while and if you have lots of leaves take them off apart from two at the top. thats about all i know mate. lots of people on here will be able to help though.
one other thing mate goon onya for getting into bonsai so young and haveing such a great hobby at such a young age. you will have plenty of rewarding trees for the rest of your life. i am looking forward to seeing some of your work. keep it all up mate

tridents should be realy easy to take root aswell, i havent had a problem with them by just doing clean cuts and sticking them in propagation soil.
heel cuttings have worked best for me though

Get a large soft drink bottle, cut the bottom off and remove the cap and place that over your cuttings whose ends you have dipped in hormone rooting powder and put them in propagating sand [available at most hardwares or garden centres]. Keep in light shade and keep moist. Full sun will cause the humidified container to steam them so shade is important. You will know if they have taken by the brown or new leaves that will form. Good luck.

this is one of my plants. Sorry about the bad photo! i bought a while ago and it was in a plastic pot and needed a lot of work. i think it scrubbed up pretty good. wait how do u post images?

under the text box is some layers. options, upload attachment etc, click the upload attachment tab and browse your computer files to find the pic then press add file

very good mason! that tree has potential. at the next repot i would saw off that big root growing towards the viewer and pot up deeper to grow new roots, from the cut in proportion with the trunk. while you are at it chop the rest back to the closest root to the trunk. in future this will give you a much better nebari.

great work mate, cant wait to see future shots of this one, some branch structure and foliage will and this will have a great silhouette. both in leaf and out of leaf.

It was a lot easier than I thought. I just had about 30 cuttings in the potting mix in a foam box. Put in the shade a watered them well. Now I have more than enough for a forrest planting. Rooting hormone would be a great option and probably would help too.

Note that I did the same for japanese maples but success rate was a lot lower. They got new leaves too but then died away after a while. The tridents seem more hardy.
