I missed doing the normal winter repot so come the stressful hot days the leaves got ratty. Hence the untimely decision to slip pot, which 'though into a larger pot meant root pruning which I have tried to keep to a minimum. To keep stress on the tree to as little as possible I have completely removed the foliage leaving only the leaf stalks.

Thats a great tree been caught out like that too. Having to slip pot a root bound tree in summer. It happens

I was forced into a root prune and repot a few weeks ago of a trident and its growing well. I think aftercare is important when repotting at this time od year.

To slip pot, is to remove it from one pot into a larger pot without doing any root work. Literally pull it out of one and put it into another larger pot. Water.

Hi ric , very nice tree there . With such a tree slip potting would be like a walk in the park . As Brian has said its the aftercare that is important

Hi Ryozo , mate "slip potting" is when you remove a tree from a pot??? be it nursery or bonsai pot and pot it into another container be it larger or smaller , deeper or shallower ,nursery or bonsai container . Root pruning can take place but it should be minimal if it is out of the root pruning season . I have recently dug a largish Trident trunk out of the grow bed and slipped it into a bonsai pot , this too is slip potting , the grow bed is just a growing container of a different kind . It was root pruned in the form of a shovel , yes it is still alive after 5 weeks

The Sango Kaku Maples I have recently purchased have all been slip potted into various containers .
