Thanks for pointing this video out Homer. I'm about halfway through and it is great, a must watch for people growing bonsai stock in regular nursery containers.

Great info on the benefits of air pruning roots. I have had stock trees growing in colanders since 2008 and have repotted trees after 3-5 years growing in colanders undisturbed and found masses of fibrous roots going in all directions as in the video.

Throw away those nursery pots bonsai folk, they are obsolete and go find some colanders that don't break too quickly in UV light.

I second Mojo's comments.
You have started me upon another binge. A learning binge - there has been significant research undertaken since my student days.
I constantly ask myself - why wouldn't i believe the Japanese bonsai methodologies, their 'bonsai rules' were only developed over the past 2000 years (almost).
I guess my mind requires to know the science behind WHY i will cut this root or branch in a certain manner, etc.
Also the practise of bonsai removes the theory of natural selection and the plants survival is completely reliant upon my abilities as a bonsai practitioner.

Then i say - don't think too much.
