Announcing a brand new event for the Sydney and surrounding bonsai community. In conjunction with the Australian Koi Association's 35th Koi Show, will be held the inaugural Autumn Bonsai and Penjing Expo.

This event will display some of the very best bonsai and penjing from in and around the Sydney area and these will be for sale - not just display! The event will also feature suiseki and viewing stones and there will be a general sales area as well.

The Expo will be held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Saxony Road, Horsley Park NSW (just off the M7). It's on Sunday, 17th April 2016, 9.00am - 3.00pm. Free admission, free parking, raffles, a canteen on site and much more.

Thanks to all the Bonsai and Penjing fans who turned up to make this inaugural Expo a huge success.

Well over a thousand people came to visit the Expo and the Koi Show.

Every seller sold trees, some all of them, with prices ranging from $500 - $2100. The most expensive tree on offer sold.

So, stay tuned for news about the Spring Bonsai and Penjing Expo!

But Im always puzzled why the only JBP you see for sale in Australia, even at large meets are whips.
Skinny trunks and sparse foliage.

Is that cause people stick JBP in bonsai pots from a young age and expect them to thicken in a confined space??

To be honest i thought most of the trees were well over priced.

Probably the lack of planning or the knowing of how to grow a thick, tapered trunk with branches and good close back buds are missing. I find that it's very difficult to achieve both good trunk and good branches. Don't want to hijack the thread but it's an interesting but often misunderstood subject.

Was nice to see all the bonsai displays over the weekend. Wish there was more to see though (and more to buy)

Maybe you only see cheaper tree's for sale, at local bonsai shows etc,because club mentality, of most members, is,they can grow it themselves.True they can, but most of the tree's for sale there ,were over 25 -35 yrs old.I did not see any whips for sale,of jbp,that were that age.The age can only get you,lovely old bark, finer needles,more branches better styling.If you want all that,then grow your own.See how far you get,and report back to us in 25yrs.If a jbp is grown in the ground, you will get the size, but not the aged bark.It will take you another 25 yrs to achieve that.There are always people that will whinge about prices, because they can't afford it.That's fine.If you want all the above, be like the other people, that have gone out on a limb, grown the stock, from their own seed, and spent 25-35 yrs to do it.If you can do it, in 5yrs, you are a miracle worker....

My apologies if this offends anyone's bonsai sensibilities, but I find the notion that consumers be required to re-imburse growers for time on the calendar as fairly ridiculous.

If the price you are paying for a tree is determined solely by a tree's age, you are in most circumstances wasting your money. Especially in Australia.

Obviously I am not talking about yamadori here, this is in relation to nursery stock and bonsai developed from nursery stock.

What should be recognised by by all and is already by the savvy bonsai shopper, and happily paid for, is clearly evident development time and the skills used while doing so.
Applying this simple methodology when buying bonsai immediately devalues sticks in pots, bunningsai, mallsai, crapsai and dare I say it a lot of clubsai too while adding value to pre-bonsai and bonsai that has good root establishment, a flared base, taper, good branch arrangement, branch structure and even the buzzword that everyone drops, but in evidence, few understand: ramification.

There are plenty of very good bonsai growers in every state of Australia. Support them and they will support you.
