hi everyone
i thought i'd share a bit of work done to a picea(not sure of the exact species) during the Easter break. it was purchased as a neglected, unloved, and overgrown nursery stock 14 years ago for a large sum of $2.00. it has been shaped twice before today and it's finally looking half decent now. it measures about 108cm in height, i was tempted to reduce it below 100cm but i don't mind it being a tall and slender triple trunk bunjin. perhaps a number of branches too much for a literati style, but they can come off in the next wiring session.

Ps. Re the branches and literati style, I don't think this even needs to be classified, for me it is well styled and thats all it needs to be. I can't remember the last time I attempted to keep a tree within the bounds of a certain style,

Style the tree as it requires and as you see fit, good style is good style

If u meant the apex leaning back to the left, I did that on purpose as it appeals better to my eye.

you did a great job restyling . I think a change of pot this winter . to me the tree deserves a nicer pot . Maybe still something round or a drum . something with texture maybe . Just my

The number of branches probably don't bother me as much as the thickness of some of the main branches. They will be addressed next time, most likely jinned and replaced with smaller branches.

Hi Matthew,
The pot is definitely too large for the tree now and I am thinking along the same line as what you suggested. It'd most likely go into a nanban round pot which is coming from Japan at the end of April.

Is this why the lowest left branch wasn't dropped at more of an angle?

Yeah I meant the apex. I was just wondering why the lean but if that's the way you want it no further correspondence need be entered into.
It's not as if it's a big issue. The tree is really nice and the difference in thickness of some branches doesn't worry me at all! You see it all the time with Japanese trained ezos.

that branch is rather thick and i could have under cut it to drop the angle lower. but it is pointing downward enough to let it go. it is a bit too long at the moment and it will be shortend next time.

the thick branches in fact thickend badly in the first wiring when the wires cut in unexpectedly quick. it was my observation that with picea, wire tends to cut in very,very quickly at the junction where the branch leaves the trunk. i will definitely keep a closer eye on the wires this time.
