Initial thought: Slow growing species but has small leaf and fruits that could be suitable for shohin training.

Some trimming... have to wait till spring time to do root work and reduce pot size.

Interested to know if you will put this into a bonsai pot or just into a smaller plastic pot?

And what the thought behind it is, eg are you happy with trunk size for now and are working on leaf development therefore it'll go into a bonsai pot? Or are you putting it in a smaller plastic pot, smaller than this but not as shallow as a bonsai pot would be, to reduce the root ball but still give it room for good growth?

Ahhhh...sorry... my bad. It's a Chinese name and I didn't get the correct pronunciation for it. Thanks Ken for fixing it. Chriswaghorn, this is an extremely slow growing species in regarding to trunk size. For the time allowed in this comp, movement developments would be much more significant then trunk sizing... I haven't got a specific bonsai pot but hopefully will find a more shallow pot for it.

I took a thin layer of the top soil off the pot to check on the root system this arvo. It didn't look great. There is no lateral spreading of fine feeder roots. It appears that the plant has been in a tall pot which encourages vertical root development. There are also a couple of unwanted crosses of thick roots. Removing the root ball from the pot reviewed finer root spreading at the bottom section of the pot. I decided to cut off an ugly thick crossing root and then broke the top part of the root ball to review more roots. This gave me an idea about how this is heading...

Here is my new rough design...
Possible issues: soil will fall off and exposed aerial roots may dry out and die off. ( I will be getting some clay to mix with my potting mix to help with this)
Positive point: turning the negative vertical spreading of roots to a feature that improves the over all look of the tree.
I guess it is worth the risk...

Not much to work on yet.
