Why cut paste?

A question, which I'm sure has a good answer.

General wisdom in horticulture these days, is that cuts to trees don't need treatment, and they in fact recover faster if untreated.

In bonsai, it is always said to treat trunk chops/larger branch removal etc with cut paste.

Is there a reason that a tree being cut is treated differently because it's a bonsai? Or is it still just a hangover from years of 'doing it this way'?

I own a tub of it and used it a few times, but personally I didn't find it useful and have not used it since. Having said that, I don't own many of the species that they recommend it for. It never did anything for the natives I tried it on.

Buy some for yourself and try it on a number of cuts. Then on other cuts, let them heal without it....then make up your own mind.
There is so much out there for both sides of the argument.
