Hi,
Ive got a couple of fig cuttings and my little callistermon and casuarina to grow on and I'm thinking about buying a more advanced plant from south. Can anyone tell me if any of the more traditional bonsai plants will grow in the tropics?
I have seen junipers and Chinese elm as bonsai at the nursery but I don't know how long they have been here or if once the wet season hits with the heat and humidity if they will die,

I live in Jakarta, all ficus doing good, Juniper, Fukien tee, Bougenvil, Buxus harlandii, Eugenia uniflora Cayenne cherry, Sumatran Pine, White Pine, and many more doing well here.
Juniper ar constant growing no issue with the rain, exception on Shari's, take them out of the rain during the rain season, I had one root and before I noticed it, it was to late.

JBP does well up north i believe and I imagine juniper procumbens would be OK too.
Suggest get a couple of each as starters and try them.

A very well drained soil or inorganic mix to stop them staying too wet over summer.

Chinese elm should do OK, and Junipers. Japanese maple will not, nor would hornbeam or hawthorn. Swamp cypress should do well also. Look around in the "ordinary" section of the nursery and then see if those species do well as bonsai.

Well done with the group contact Deanna, I think you might be really surprised at just what will grow in Darwin. Whatever you do, get yourself a Thai Temple Bells. They are totally gorgeous up there. But Robyn will see you right - she's Graeme trained

Robyn is away at the moment but I spoke to a lady named Val, she seems really lovely can't wait till tomorrow.

Can you remember Val's last name Deanna? Wasn't Sweeney was it?

Val Hayes, seems to be quite fond of fig trees and there is another lady named Maureen Waldman.

Way back in the early 90s I painted logos on some shirts for the Darwin Bonsai club, were you around then?
