Anyone know what the name of this tree is? Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of the tree itself but it was almost all yellow and red.

I agree with squizzy. At this time of year there should also be dark seed capsules on the tree, each which contains a single white seed.

The currently accepted name is Triadica sebifera. Sapium will probably be used by nurseries for some time though. If you wish to grow this species then I'd recommend finding a particularly colourful specimen and propagate it via cuttings as you will ensure you have a specimen that colours nicely. They can be quite variable otherwise and you may receive one that simply turns a dull yellow-brown.

Not a good Bonsai subject due to dieback and infuriating habits to not layer or bud back. I have tried a couple with no success.

There's no scale to judge the size of these leaves
My first impression is Cotinus - smoke bush but I'd need some more info to make a better guess - shape/ size of the tree, size of these leaves, type of bark, where it is growing, any seed/ flowers. Triadica is definitely a possibility as well.
If you can get back to us with some more photos it would help to narrow down the possibilities.
