Good or bad shroom.

Hi guys,
Anyone know if this little guy is a goodie or a baddie? And if he is bad, would a fungal spray be the solution? It's only the one that has popped up in a Trident pot.
Cheers,
Pearcy.

Hello Pearcy,
Soil borne fungi fruits are generally of no concern to the plant's health.
However, if the fungi fruits are disc shaped, no stems and attached to the tree, that spells trouble.
Do you use a microbiological fertiliser? If so they are full of beneficial fungi, which this is just the fruiting body of such fungi.
I personally wouldn't be concerned, however, i am no mycologist.

Like Kevin says. there are thousands of different fungi and the vast majority are benign, many even beneficial. there's only a few that are troublesome. I get quite a few different fruiting bodies coming up in my pots but rarely have problems with the trees. I suspect that, given reasonable conditions most trees can fight off infection of most fungi and survive.
Armillaria is one genus that causes root rots. They do produce small yellow coloured fruiting bodies but I'm also not a fungi expert and they are notoriously difficult to identify accurately, even harder from a small photo. You might be able to search a bit and see what you can find Pearcy. You will probably also find treatment if you think it warranted.

Doesn't look like any of the magic mushrooms I know Bodhi. Probably best not to test it out

Its fine, I have many of these. Plus white ones etc... Unless it is attached to the tree most fungi are fine.
Cheers

Thanks heaps for the replies guys. Unfortunately I have just gotten home from work so haven't had time to give some proper research into the kind, so I'll let you know how I go tomorrow.
Neil I researched Armillaria QUICKLY but it was sending my mind down the path of "all my trees are going to die a slow white rotting death that spreads" haha, so I have ceased research until I can check it properly in the morning.
If it is fine I look forward to more popping up! It was more the colour that was making me think it was bad for some reason haha.
Cheers,
Pearcy.

A toxic
Galerina sp.
EDIT: Just reading the comments, funnily enough this one of the ones that kill people from liver failure due to eating them after wrong identification. They actually do look very similar to another mushroom that is much sought after

I can't really see it being that detrimental to your tree, that said I try not to have too much fungal activity happening under the ground, except with pines of course.

Hello Pearcy,
Toxic for human consumption. Just don't smoke it, eat it, or drink it.
If so concerned just remove the bark in which it has set root. Any fungicide will destroy all the beneficial fungi as well.

Thanks for the ID literati! I quick Google search seems to be looking right before in some photos.
Info on them seemed fine for the tree except this one - All galerinas are saprotrophs, meaning they feed on dead organic material. You'll find them growing on dead or decaying wood.
Hope repot doesn't have a bad surprise under there!
Cheers all for the help.

Hopefully not. You'll probably find that it is growing out of the mulch. Worth checking if you're concerned though.
