Hi,

I've got this little juniper, and while on the most part the tree looks to be healthy with nice green/(?)active tips, there are some brown tips. They've probably been lingering for a couple of months now and over that time have progressed from a light yellow to the current brown.

Bit of a background on this bonsai; it sits out side with morning sun exposure, and some more sun in the mid arvo. It was potted in the current pot about 12 months ago. Same watering regime as my other happier juniper. I had scale on another juniper and treated that with Confidor (ready to use) and gave this one a spray (on a few occasions between April-May) too as it had a couple of scales.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

Too little or too much water or just injury to those tips

The brown tips should come off if you gently put them between your thumb and index finger and rub with your fingers.

I find if there is lack of sun on a particular side the needles go limp, thin and brown.

I've also found that during winter, especially after ice cold winds (im in Melbourne) that the very top of the tips and that exposed to the cold go bronze. The underside doesn't.

The tips of yours browning might have not been ready or mature enough to brave the cold.

Your tree looks very young,so it seems to me,that it is only the juvenile tips,that are going brown,that is the single strands.In time [short to 2-3yrs,]you will get more mature foliage.This tends to be fulller, almost like a fan shape.Through out the life of your tree, this will be a constant thing,as the tree grows new growth, it sheds the old.Plenty of sun,particularly this time of the year,is required,to help keep your tree in top condition.In 20-30 yrs, should become a masterpiece.Don't forget, this is bonsai,and it takes time,not speed.L..
