Hinoki transfer

I live in Melbourne and have a Hinoki in a regular pot that is ready for transfer into a bonsai pot.

When should I be doing this?

It's winter right now with most trees getting ready to burst new blossoms.

The weather I have is not dis-similar to Melbourne's and I re-pot mine in early October. Hopefully others from Melbourne will chime in.

Keen to see responses, also have one I want to move to bonsai pot. The tree has never been styled, wondering if I should style now and leave in the nursery pot for another year :( or give a light prune and move to its new home now and style later.

Was looking at my tree earlier, lot of new growth. Going according to the tree would have thought it is ready to transplant now, or is it better once growth hardens off?

Daluke, is your tree pushing new foliage?

Now is a great time to repot your cypress in Melbourne. I'll be doing mine this week, as it is currently potted in a garden mix. I'll be potting it up in some nice bonsai mix and it will be left to gain some vigour before I put some wire on it around December.

Mine a still winter bronzed.

A few tips have some new growth.

Is it okay to repot with existing wire?

Existing wire should be fine, the tree should be accustomed to it already. What you don't want to do is style the tree and stress it and then repot as well.

I repotted mine last week, removed unnecessary growth and branches, ensuring to leave plenty new growth to help recover. Will leave to recover now and style / wire later in the year.
