Some days are diamonds.....

Through a remote friend of a friend contact some weeks ago I was asked if I was interested in some bonsai pots? The owner was moving to aged care, the family needed to move many things. The owner of the pots was a very active member of the bonsai community during the 60's, 70's and early 80's. In the early 80's she stopped, her trees went to club members or were sold off, the pots went into the garage of her home. I was able to meet with one of the family yesterday and took possession of about 90 medium/small and large pots, also some 180 mame/shohin pots! I drove away very slowly and carefully with lots of pots clinking in the back of the Commodore. 85% of the larger pots are Japanese marked with chops, also a some mass produced Japanese, but some unmarked and clearly vintage Japanese pots. The mame/shohin are 90% Japanese most with chops, a couple of Korean and Chinese pots. I've just spent two days cleaning off 30-35 years of dirt, dust, insects, possum, rat and mice dung. I'm still gobsmacked, haven't done an exact count and have to get them off the kids table tennis table soon to a safer spot! The pots, came with trees from the Koreshoffs and later just pots from Megumi Bennett.

Charlie at this stage there will be no sales.

This is a journey I didn't think much about when I picked the pots up! I'm still sourcing some pot experts, and the net, to give me a better idea of what I have. Given the history of these pots in Australia I'd like to identify correctly as many as possible and then figure out what to do. The net is a very slow process given I don't read Japanese, but I have identified some, through 'chop' sites. I did see one bloke today who identified two pots and said put them in bubble wrap straight away.

Yep there certainly will be more trees at my place but that might be a slow process given the quality of the pots. The mame pots, at least most of them, are worthy of some kind of display case/shelving somewhere.
