This is part of our garden which has a Japanese theme, but uses native plants as well as exotics in the design. They work well together and complement each other in my opinion. It may be that Australian natives could be used exclusively in a Japanese garden design, although I have never seen such a garden it is food for thought.

I also think that many australian natives go well with Japanese styled gardens. A good way to tell what works, is to look at an Aussie native rockery, and imagine the rocks are marble or granite, and covered in moss. A lot of small growing shrubs would be ideal, such as Acacia 'Mini Cog', 'Limelight', 'Curvaceous" "Gold Nugget" etc. Things like Sonantha species (previously Babingtonia, previously Baeckea), Westringia species and Correa species all being great.

In 2007 at the Kings Park Festival in Perth a friend who is a Japanese Landscape designer was commissioned to do just that.

He created a total Japanese garden using nothing but Australian Native plants.
It was then pulled down and is now waiting to be put up again some where in the Zoo.

I read your thread so I thought I would answer, then go away and find some pictures. They have been posted here before so I still have them in my PC somewhere.

nice watto, good topic, i think alot of australian species can be used for japanese styled gardens, and just as pup has shown it can work really really well!

Thanks for showing them pup! Im amazed how well the sandstone works. . . .

Also, i would love to see that tree in the 2nd last pic (Eucalyptus orbifolia) used as bonsai. Perhaps i am pushing it a bit far now? Oh well, maybe i will have to try and get my hands on one myself.
