Hello everyone when it's time to remove the wire do you cut or unwind the wire?

Depends on whether you think you are going to damage the branches,I do both depending on how brittle the tree is,experience will tell you,if in doubt cut it off

Nip small branches..Unwind 'big wire'.
If it has hardened on the tree no alternative but to cut.
If it has bitten the trunk or branch unwind gently.
I unwind trunks and cut branches.
Other may differ but that's why we are on a forum.

I'm tight, I unwire - carefully.

In my early endeavours at Bonsai, I read an article by one of the Japanese masters.
Wish I could remember his name, anyway he said in the article to learn to wire correctly.

First learn to unwire,I have since used my wire at least twice at least.

If I need to I will cut it off.

Pup's advice to first learn to unwire It is very easy to unwind the branch instead of the wire so ask yourself is that little bit of wire worth losing a branch for?

I usually unwire my trees. Reusing wire is another thing entirely. I don't use aluminium wire but I think it is easier to reuse? but copper work hardens after it is bent so by the time you have wound it on and then wound it off it will be far stiffer and does not bend evenly around the branches and twigs. Copper must be annealed before using it again. The good news - it can be used over and over after annealing after each use. I have some copper that I've used every year for possibly 10 years.

I mostly unwire and straighten it in a vice with multi grips. I have reused it several times and the really old stuff i use for pull downs and wiring in my mesh over drain holes, wiring in the tree etc.
