Hi all, I've collected some pallets laying on the nature strip planning to make some training pots for my bonsai...is it a good idea? Do they have any bad chemicals that could harm the tree? Any help super appreciated!!!

No problems so far.

I've worked with many pallets over the years, there's softwood, hardwood, polymer and sometimes painted woods but never seen any chemically treated.
Where did you collect them from. If residental, probably whitegoods.
Retail, Industrial and Commercial would be fined for dumping.

I made one today from old fence palings.

I got hold of a batch of pallets made from treated pine at one stage Kevin so there are some around. The timber still rots away but much slower than the plain pine ones. Some international pallets have had various chemical treatments to be able to enter Australia but I don't know of any that will affect plants growing in them.
CHEP (blue) pallets are made from Aussie hardwood but usually crap species (good timber goes to higher value use). Most will rot after a few years but occasionally you can get some made from more durable timber.
There is actually an international (EU?) pallet stamp on some pallets. If you understand the symbols and numbers it tells you where it was made and what treatments have been applied.

This sounds like a good idea.

Question: what size do you have a standard size or do you size them to fit the tree?
