Hi,

Does anyone know what this tree is? I'm on holiday in New York City right now and the autumn colour is starting. Im finding myself constantly seeing the trees as giant bonsai. This tree was particularly attractive to me as it's not very tall yet but has love branching.

My guess would be some type of Cercis .

Looks like cottonwood to me. They'd be held back by their environment, no doubt. Not much sun, very little root run.

I'd say Cottonwood too - pretty common street tree over there.

I've found another one turning colour with little red berries. I think this one is a crabapple, but I couldn't get a good photo of the trunk. What do you think? It was in Central Park.

I think that new one is Craetagus (probably Washington Thorn which is a US native)
Personally I'm doubtful about the Cottonwood ID for the other one but can't offer any other suggestions for it

I think Neil is on the money with Washington hawthorn. I was wondering about the first one as well. Could it be tilia Cordata. I haven't seen a large tree before so have little idea of the growth habit.

I think you're both right on that last one.

It is a bit hard to tell from the photo on my iPad , but are the leaf margins toothed on the first tree ?

I'm pretty sure they weren't toothed

Got another lovely one. It was raining so the bark might be dark because it's wet but I loved the colour with the dark branches showing through

Hi Beano . Looks like your having fun . I'm still going with Cercis ,probably Cercis canadensis common name redbud .Cootonwood and Tilia have toothed leaf margins . I have one that is just starting to leaf out now ,the new leaves are so delicate . The third tree may be Nyssa sylvatica a bit hard to tell for sure with the quality of the photo .Enjoy your holiday .

Thanks for all the tree IDs. They're all so pretty I want them all as bonsais. I'm moving to Adelaide soon so might look into getting an oak but from what I understand I'll need to be patient with it, slow growing and all.
