As I have very few larger trees I pondered on how can I give the appearance of a large tree when in fact the actual stock is small.
1.Larger pot.
2.Tray of such but not a pot.
3.Trees that I have purposely kept low.
4.Frame the trees around something larger.

Well the stock was handy.
A pair of Cotoneaster that were doing fine in their homes. The frame was already cleaned up. So away we go and here is what eventuated.

Only thing I would say is that I've seen tanuki often done with grooves and channels made to help the adhesion process. IE make a channel for branch/trunk too sit recessed in from the get go.

I reckon the berries on white trunk will look great!

Plenty of time for grooving the drift wood.
Get the trees established first.
Attached via hidden drilling and twist threads to pull back hard.
I like Cot's as they wire set where ever you want them so I'm hoping (1) get a few flowers. (2) set some berries (3) set wiring and (4) get the pads going over this season.

This type of cot is semi-deciduous so once Autumn drop takes place this will/should be groovy time. (Was full leaf drop this Autumn/Winter..year before that about 60% dropped)

Boics meant dremelling a groove or channel into the driftwood and 'slotting' the Cotoneaster trunks into the channel. It helps integrate the tree into the driftwood and is a trickier way of making it look like it is a natural pairing.
