I am trying to identify this deciduous plant - please see images attached.

From the photos it looks like an english elm.

Maybe a closeup of the bark will help clarify.

No, definitely not an English elm - different bark and leaf margins.

I'm going to guess some sort of cherry or another prunus but I'm not confident of that ID. There's not a lot to go on in those pics.

From memory in Autumn the leaves turn a yellow colour, similar to one of the Hornbeams I have. Is it possible it could be a Hornbeam?

Yes . My guess would be a Korean Hornbeam , Carpinus turczaninowii (don't ask me how you actually say that )

Definitely looks like it could be a hornbeam.
A telltale sign would be the unfurled buds which are pointy and similar to beech.
Do the leaves fall off in Autumn or do they dry and just hang? Cause this is another trait I've noticed.

In regards to the leaves I think from memory half stayed attached..
In Autumn the leaf colour changes to a yellow, not a mix of colours like my trident maple.. and when I've seen Korean hornbeam bonsai they appear to have mottled red/orange/yellow leaves in Autumn?

If anyone has some styling suggestions that would also be appreciated! I feel like it's getting way too leggy and needs a trim.

Could be North American, the loose leaf Hornbeam has leaves that turn yellow in Autumn. The plant looks very leggy. When I prune my plants they tend to sulk, but over time they continue to grow.

Thanks Roger! Yeah I'm not entirely sure, I have a larger hornbeam (which I think is European) and you can see the leaves are different but both Hornbeams turn the same colour yellow in Autumn...
