I have read that modern Chinese pots are often better than those currently produced in Tokoname. The Valavanis blog was the last place I read this. Does anybody know where to get high quality hand made Chinese pots from?

Chinese pots have always been highly prized by Japanese bonsai artists. Remember, bonsai developed from the Chinese art of Penjing at a time when many elements of Chinese culture were revered and emulated by Japanese scholars.

Ebay is a good source.

Look out for Lingnan, yixing and purple clay (zisha) pots. He also has some cool Japanese pots. Tell him I sent ya!

China is a big place with a lot of people. They can make almost anything and can make it however you want. This applies to pots, tools, machinery, solar panels, etc. If you want cheap stuff they can make it cheap. If you specify high quality there will be someone who can make it but don't expect to pay cheap prices for quality.
I'm sure there are still quality potters in China. It is just that we have specified price as the major factor so we only see cheap, nasty Chinese pots here at the moment.

Yixing pots are top notch, and I have several, purchased in Hong Kong and on ebay.

I have not ordered anything from this site so I don't know anything about how they are to deal with, but if you're looking for quality, modern, Chinese pots, this is where you will find them.

I recently bought a few pots from Bonsai Environment in Sydney and they were of Chinese origin, one was very large but a cheaper mass produced version, and a couple of much better quality pots, Chinese again, but of course I couldn't say they were hand made.

Generally things made in china are mass produced garbage. Obviously there's an exception to this, there probably is quality things that come from there.
But most of the time if someone is looking for quality, they steer clear of China.
Even bonsai tools for instance, mostly Japanese for quality, and even the better Chinese tools are made from Japanese steel.

I think any tree that you have worked on for years and years deserves a high quality pot, whether that's tokoname or something else. In the grand scheme is things what's a couple hundred dollars compared to 10, 15, 20 years of work.

It is a strange perception that the Chinese only produce poor quality products. They invented the bonsai pot after all, and bonsai as TT points out. Many (most?) of the pots at Kokufu are old Chinese.
Thanks for the link TT, it looks like a wholesale site. I will see what eBay can offer up. If anyone has any experience buying new Yixing or old Chinese pots let us know.
