Hi guys, first post, new and addicted to the art form. Yamadori and nursery stock will be my thing, as my background is in cacti and succulents, mostly propagation based. Yamadori is in my blood. Wondering if anyone has an idea what this guy is? He was next to some rosemary I dug up, but upon closer inspection, I found it had very different leaf structure. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, it seems to have an ant colony inside it, so I sprayed it w insecticide, then hosed it down a minute or two later. Did this several times as I have bad luck with insecticide. Not sure how I would like to plant this guy yet, however I am partial to partial/cascade styles. Yet I think it may prove interesting in the upright position.

I hit it with some rooting powder before I ran short on soil and time to pot it, so it's currently awaiting my next moves. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, looking forward to exploring this community and learning new ways to enjoy my passion for planting. Cheers!

Difficult to tell with the pics supplied. When i zoom in the image is blurry. Can you post a close up of the foliage?

Or when they do not load at all

I can't even get a good look at the leaf shape.
For a good ID we need closeup of leaves as well as what the bark looks like. Any other clues like where it was growing, size and shape of the original plant can help. Flowers and fruit are the most helpful but not always available.

Here ya go, pic of the bark closer up, the leaves on the tree I have, and a picture of what looks like the exact same shrub/plant from the same vicinity I found it in that I took today. It lacked any hardwood, but the leaves seem identical and it's a clearer shot. Hope this helps!

Thanks WNWN. The leaves look a little familiar but I can't dredge up a name to go with them California is a long way from here so you might be growing some plants we are not really familiar with.
From the look of all that new growth I suspect that it should bud on older wood quite well which bodes well for the collected plant.

Still haven't put this badboy in a pot yet, any advice on upright or a more horizontal planting? I've treating the cut roots with rooting hormone, and had to tackle an ant infestation after getting it home, but it's high time I get it in a pot. Suggestions?
