Wire Damage - Green texture growing?

Hi Guys,

I recently wired a branch to hold it up as it was drooping. The wire was on around 5-6 months. Thankfully, we had a strong Spring combined with new soil, new pot and a good fertiliser over those months.

As a result, my bonsai grew rapidly and it was too late before i noticed the wire begun digging into the branch. I did some reading and found Junipers generally heal quickly and that there are a few products to help mend the wound. I decided to observe and watch it heal which it began doing. Last week however, a green texture began to grow. Almost looks like a green puss, but it is hard in nature, not gooey etc.

Tried scouring google but to no avail

Any thoughts or advise? Is it just the fresh branch building up?

TL:DR - What is this green stuff in the wire wound?

Thanks
Andrew

I believe that green stuff is the callus trying to heal the wound your wire has created. Callus is actively growing cambium cells which can turn into wood, bark or roots depending on the conditions it encounters. I expect this bit will form bark because it is exposed to air. You may find it grows a bit thicker than the surrounding branch and form a swollen area there.

Hi Andrew , mate I would say its the cambium layer repairing itself after the damage done by the wire biting in too much . I wouldn't be too concerned as its a healthy looking plant .

Yeah mate, definitely cambium. This happens to me all the time around the edges of my Shari. It's a sign of a very healthy tree.

Thanks everyone!

Yep, the plant is quite healthy. Very green, no real brown needles at all :)

Since posting the photo the cambium is much larger than the branch but still looks to be healing well!
