Did a trade today with someone for a Morton Bay Fig and a Port Jackson Fig
Thinking of chopping the P.J Fig at the line so i dont get a bulge there... will probably remove the 2 lower branches on the Morton Bay to stop reverse taper too

For some seeds and a few seedlings im happy

I really do like the smaller ones and have full intention of going Shohin but i thought it would probably be best to wait now to fully trunk chop?

Probably odd given just last week i trunk chopped a Trident lol
I just don't want any bulging / reverse taper

I really need to repot now they are both potted in mud ... do you still think it's safe to do both this time of year?

Up where you are I suspect you could repot figs any time of year.
I would just cut them both fairly hard to get lots of new shoots then work out what shape to make the trees.

Did you have a look at cutting off the thicker trunk and leaving the thinner one? Taper is important in bonsai and, , especially important in figs so look for the best taper - thick-thin - lines you can find.

Yes fine to repot figs now - can do it virtually all year around up here. Make sure you put them into a good free draining mix so you can feed them heavily. Always best to cut low as it saves time but do what you feel comfortable with.

Before you chop the lower branch consider leaving it for a sacrifice branch.

Reverse taper is often caused by bar branching (where two or more branches came from the same spot on either side of the trunk/branch).

If both branches are left on to thicken this is likely to occur.

But if you were to remove all the branches but one, it will cause the portion of trunk below that point to thicken faster than if no branches were left.

Just remember that if you choose to leave a sacrifice branch, removing it once it has elongated and thickened may leave a large scar. Therefore sacrifice branches are normally grown on the rear of the tree where possible, so as to be out of sight until healed over.

Or you could chop out the centre and leave the 2 branches. Eliminates multiple branches from one spot and starts the process of taper as mentioned by shibui. You could leave one long and the other cut short, do your repot and then let grow and feed well. Then sometime in summer chop back hard and it will explode with new shoots all over the place and you can start selecting branches then.

Going by the pics there's at least 10 more plants there once you've finished cutting back.
