Gday Gday,
I have just returned from the local fruit shop and brought back with me some polystyrene box's (grow box's). I am intending on using them for a few J.Maples and a Trident Maple. They are currently still in the nursery black plastic pots. At this time of year is it a good idea to transfer them into the grow box's. Can anyone recommend what type of potting mix works well. I have never used grow box's before as I am still very new to bonsai but I have decided to be patient with my trees and get them looking good before putting them into bonsai pots,
I just need some advice and direction on the way to approach this.
Any help out there???

a bit late now to do any kind of root work. you can just slip them out of the pots and slap them into the boxes and slop the negative space with fresh soil.
to grow stock on i use equal parts, 7mm scoria, commercial orchid mix and pine bark mulch fine.

Thanks Antal.
So basically i just remove them from the nursery pots and put them in the grow box's? I guess fertilsising/and seasol etc is recommended?

thats it hutch. the fact you are not messn with roots allows you to get on with fertalising immediately. couple of generous pinches of osmocote scattered and a weekly watering of seasol 1/4 to 1/2 strength is in order for now. mid autumn fertalise with tomato liquid fert. weekly, 1/4 strength mixes.

Hey Hutch, everything ant said except dont forget to put something in the bottom of your grow box. That something could be flywire or newspaper as pup does, otherwise all your soil will leak out as you water.

Hey Ant, just wondering, with that watering and fertilising regime,
would that apply to your trees in your Bonsai pots?
or is that strictly for when you have trees in grow boxes?
Thanx,
Jordy
