OK, its not a real bonsai, but it still looks nice. It is a Loropetalum chinensis and I have had it for a year or two now - and my wife likes it, so it stays!

That looks great, love the flowers on it as its miniture pink streamers everywhere hahaha and it is flowering a treat in your care.

It is real, it is in a bonsai pot. Haters going to hate, but its a Bonsai to me. Heck I have seen stores label something like that with a $50 pricetag and the added bonus, the boss loves it :p and that could mean more Bonsai hehe

OHHH, pretty Cannot see any reason why you could not develop it

I have one of these as a garden plant in the front yard. It seems to be in flower half the year, will be great once developed.

Had a hedge across the front of the house, in the ground for 7-8 yrs.Beaut trunk fantastic flowers. Thought they'd make a great bonsai. Keep it going , looks great

I have dug a couple of these from garden renovations. They seem to have all the attributes needed for bonsai: Respond to pruning very well; Transplant quite easily so should tolerate root pruning well; Relatively tough. As a bonus they seem to grow from root cuttings. The gardens where I've dug them now have masses of new plants growing from the roots left in the ground.
Flowers are a bonus. There's a white flowered variety as well.

It's a beauty! Look forward to watching it develop!

I picked up one of these myself a few months ago, but mine has dark leaves,
it is called "Plum Gorgeous" and am letting oit grow on for a while to get bigger before hacking into it.

Nice to know it has potential too.

I dragged the darling along to the Weston Creek Bonsai Clubs exhibition a few years ago and there was one on display that was quite good (a real bonsai), and well the darling fell in love with it. Thus I now have one.
The photo attached is "the specimen" from the exhibition and it has a real trunk.

Always keen on flowering and fruiting tree's that are seldom seen.

I just had to show mine. I bought one last year, inspired by this post. Everyone at the meeting today loved it, so next pruning has to be at a meeting so everyone can take cuttings...

The plant was bought from a nursery and placed into this "training" pot. I've given it a trim once, back in Autumn, and left it to its devices over Winter. No actual training has been done yet...not even sure what I'm going to do with it! It seems to want to grow in wide flat planes...so we'll see...

I just put one in the garden to start it on the bonsai journey. They are an interesting specimen for sure!

Great flowers Mel so I'm a bit jealous. There will be no flowering down this way for quite a few months yet.

Sorry Watto, but I really needed to share, just to let you know how this post of yours is going to help spread the word. I can bet nearly everyone at Redlands Bonsai Society will have a fringe flower plant by this time next year.

Excellent thread this. What a ripping little flower. Watto needs to figure out how he can gain $/commission from all the nursery sales he has inspired! And I’m being “shohin’ed” in the process. I like this size Bonsai.
