Hey everyone,

I have been offered these "Bonsai" from a work colleague. They were her Mums, but she's been in a home for some time and her father's health is not good, so she offered these to me as they have had no care for a few years.

Just wondering if you fine knowledgeable people could help with "Name That Plant".

They definitely need repotting and some work, so advice would be greatly appreciated.

2. Juniper Squamata
3. Thuja
4. Ficus (unknown)

Thanks Daluke, I thought they were junipers & ficus. Never heard of Thuja before.

When is the best time to repot both these species? I intend to trunk chop the two ficus, so some advice would be appreciated.

It depends. How root bound are the trees? Why do you want to repot them?

I woulve said all junipr sargentii but am on the phone.
The fig looks like Port Jackson to me

Junipers are generally repotted late winter through to spring.
Ficus do much better when repotted in warmer weather so November through to January is usually considered ficus repotting season.

I would encourage repotting at the first opportunity for several reasons. These have been neglected for some time so potting mix is probably past its best. State of the roots is unknown so repotting will allow you to check and sort out problems. I always find it is best to get new bonsai into a known potting mix so you know how it will respond to your water and care regime.

This was my thinking too Neil. I just need some guidance as to the correct/suitable time for both varieties. I thought I might give the Junipers a small trim back to last healthy leaves initially. The figs are quite tall and I would prefer to cut these back hard and start from scratch. Again, whats the best time of year please.

Jujnipers you can do notr but too late canberra for figs.

they can be repotted and pruned in spring one the overnight temps get above 15 Deg C

Well they're now residing at my place. All are VERY dry and now enjoying an overnight seasol bath. The figs in my little greenhouse and the junipers catching the last sun rays. I don't think the junipers have been out in the sun for quiet some time.

Both figs will eventually be reported & trunk chopped.

Juni 1 - this looks like it may have been intended as semi cascade, so different pot needed. Prickly plant this one.


Juni 2 - definitely need some back budding to happen here.


Juni 3 - open to suggestions on this fellow.
