I've had this tree a few years now , it's developed from tube stock . It was labeled as a Mel thymifolia ,it has never flowered so I can't be positive if it is or not. It's growing out of its comfort zone up here so I have been giving it winter protection . For me it's an interesting tree , I like the bar branches so far . I have imagined it with the first branch on the right then the left and right structure . At the moment I'm keeping the second right hand branch to increase the girth on that side . Early days yet but I am interested in others thoughts .

I like the look of the tree, though it needs a bit more shaping to make it into a really interesting tree. What shape do you have in mind for the crown? Having said that, IMHO the trunk is the stand-out feature of this tree. It looks great . Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Hi Raging . You may not like this but for the foreseeable future I want to shape the crown in a triangle shape . Mainly because I want to have a sharp outline to emphasis the trunk line ,if that makes sense . The tree is 20 cm high so there is not much room to play with . As the tree ages this may change .

I have recently bought one of these as discounted nursery stock. I have given it a hard chop and have a few new shoots coming now. The flowers are really beautiful; a lovely mauve colour. Mine seems prone to have lanky growth, with foliage on the end of thin branches when I bought it. Here is one of the flowers it had: Please keep us updated, Sno.

Lovely little tree, i love the texture of the trunk / bark too.
Any chance of a good close shot showing the trunks texture.
Just above soil level at the bend where you previously removed a branch, the scar emanating from the trunk, IMO, resembles an eye, maybe an eagle's eye.
Very fascinating, can anyone else see it too?

I hope you don't mind snow but I did a little virt for you. I just removed the bottom right branch, but extended the bottom left. Crown was kept as you said although my virt isn't very natural to a Mel if that's what your after.



You mentioned winter protection - understandably as it snows where you are. Do you just put it in your glass house? Or anything else extra?

Hi Redsonic . It certainly is a beautiful flower ,when I got this one I bought a few to use as landscape trees . They all turned up their toes in the first winter . I'd given them some protection to start them off but not enough obviously . This one when the winter really gets going goes into a glasshouse . Maybe one day I'll grow it out and let it flower .

Yes a triangle would work, but if it were mine I would make it into a very asymetrical triangle like Pearcy has suggested, but maybe even a bit flatter & broader.

Hi Pearcy . Thanks for the virt . I have thought about removing that branch . Long term I have to do something about the bar branches , at the moment they're not affecting the trunkline but they will eventually . I was thinking of when the time comes of removing the branch above that first branch and then using that branch to fill the gap . The branch needs a lot more thickening . A couple of photos showing the taper

Interesting , it may well be . I got these from a wholesale native tube nursery in Canberra when I was buying some other stock for a landscaping job I did, so I am only going on what they sold me them as . What makes you think they are decussata ? both varieties have decussated leaves .
