So a few weeks ago I was out and about with the wife and came across this stand at a nursery here in Canberra.

Thought it would work well for putting some of my figs and tropical plants on over winter, was meant to go into the rumpus room at the back of the house but found a blank wall in the lounge room. I think it looks good in there and works well with the room.

It's a pretty stand, but your trees need much more light than they're going to get in that position.....

I agree Mel. There's just not enough light in that spot to maintain healthy figs all winter.

Directly across from the shelf is a large 3 panel glass sliding door and the sun comes through that from sunrise to around 10ish, and then on the side wall opposite the TV cabinet is a very large window, and during winter the sun comes through that from around 10ish to 3ish, both windows have shear curtains on them but still let a lot of light in.

Would this still not be enough light

In the past have had figs sitting on the TV cabinet and they have survived and still going

If you moved the trees over to the big double doors the trees would get a lot of natural light but be protected from the adverse elements. When the trees are getting light from one side it would be good to turn them every now and then to balance the light on the trees.

There's no doubt about it, figs are tough, and they'll probably *survive* in that position, they most certainly are not likely to thrive.

Your original photo shows all the trees in the darkest part of the room, with very little light in evidence.... hence my concern.

I hate getting technical, but this lack of light can be explained by the diagram below. A plant on the end of the tv cabinet nearest the big window will have a much better chance of thriving, rather than being 3 metres further away from that source.
The sheer curtain will also be stopping some of the light from reaching your trees.

Thanks to all for the advice, will move the room around and get them closer to the light. As long as the wife can watch her shows she doesn't care where the stand goes,
