Hi all,
I don't think this belongs in any of the other forums particularly so I hope it is ok here.
I was wondering how people handled any problems collecting yamadori of the side of the road or anywhere else. There is a cypress tree nearby with heaps of large and interesting seedlings under it. I would like to dig some up one day without going through red tape but what if a council worker comes by ans rouses me? Would I really get into trouble?

Has anyone experienced aggressive people while out hunting?

To be honest, probably the best way of avoiding any problems, is to just ask permission first. Unfortunately the Council don't usually take the "don't ask permission first, just apologise after" approach very favourably.

depending on the location, I would just go out one morning and get it. But if they're just seedlings than i would just go out with a small shovel and quickly and calmly just rip them up. I've done this a few times and also if they are near the fence line than ask the property owner if you can take them. If the council worker sees you just say you had no idea because the property owner said you could take them!

I just happen to have assisted in the removal of a few species that needed our "Protection" and I am a great fan of hiding in plain sight. I believe that generally if you look like you are completely comfortable doing it and are making no attempt to hide it then no-one seems to care.

As much as I consider myself to be an honest person, at times I have asked permission and those involved just put it in the Too Hard Basket and the tree has died or been bulldozed so now I just go fetch. Better at my place than Dead. If you are talking about the side of a road then go for your life, I have progressed to development sites and abandoned buildings.

But you are right, better to give the tree a chance at life in a Bonsai pot than the dreaded bulldozer.

i just collected 2 olives last week on the side of camden valley way i got the councils permission and even printed it out for evidence and after i collected 3 trees i really wanted someone to ask HEY WAT ARE U DOING THERE or DO U HAVE A PERMIT but yeah seriously NOONE CARES the council workers were like a couple of metres up the road

so yeah just telling u from last weeks experience

From What I have found the RTA is in charge of the water drain on the side of the road and the council the rest. The RTA was very helpful when I asked so I often stretch the water drain out a bit

All you need is a ninja suit, boot polish and some night vision goggles, go at 3 in the morning after first blacking out the local power grid and no one will be the wiser, you'll either end up with some nice wild stock or be arrested under the terrorist act but hey lifes a gamble isn't it?
