Will aerial roots sprout shoots on a ficus?

Hi guys, real quick question. I recently bought a fig which needs a trunk chop. My plan it to air layer and chop the trunk once the roots have sprouted. I'm hoping that the trunk below the air layer throws out new shoots. There is what looks to be one very large aerial root that also runs alongside the main trunk. That root will be chopped along with the trunk. Will it throw shoots too?

Cheers

Possible, seen it on bigger trees here in Indonesia.

Hi mate,

I hope you will get more qualified replies than mine as i am a newbie, but i can only think of one fig which will shoot from root, the willow leaf fig. What type of fig is yours? Also, not the best time of the year to do this work especially in Melbourne ...

Thanks guys. Looks like a PJ Fig to me. Yeah I'm leaving it alone until early Spring.

Pierre is right. The only fig that sends out shoots from its roots is the Willow Leaf. It's possible to graft foliage onto the root though. If you put up a pic you'll probably get better, more specific advice on where/what to chop.

Also, I'd wait till summer to start doing serious work, especially since you're in Melbourne.

PJ figs will shoot aerial roots. Use a tray under the pot with water to assist with humidity. I have several aerial roots on my little pj that was bought from Bunnings in about 2014/2015

Thanks guys. The "roots" may be a fused second and third trunk.

I'll chop it mid summer. PJ figs can be air layered pretty much any time down here, but spring is ideal because it throws enough roots to enable a mid-summer separation.

Picture attached. Big guy with the tall trunk.

Looks more like a Ficus hilli. And no, it won't shoot from the aerial roots. But it will from the trunk section that the roots emerge from.
