I was cleaning out the shed, and discovered this old pot I must have bought last century sometime.

Since I didn't have a clue back then, (and still don't,) it's been languishing on the shelf waiting to be used for the right tree. Only problem is, I have no idea what tree! Any suggestions please?

I'm not sure if it's confused or I am. Is it a masculine pot or not? The curve out seems to remove the totally masculine feel, the way I see it. Would a big beefy informal upright swampy work ok? Should I just sell it and give up trying to find a good match for it?

The word to describe this pot is 'formal'.
Masculine certainly, but the details added to the rectangular form are the equivalent of having on your Sunday best.
So, a formal pot needs a formal tree. A formal upright pine for example, standing straight and to attention.

I have nearly the same pot myself and i have a large trident in it.

Cheers bodhi, it does look like the same pot! Trident is probably my best bet, unless I specifically buy a large pre-prepared tree... I'll have a think

I Gotta agree with Luke Parsons here -
I'm picturing a Japanese White Pine for this pot (if your lucky enough to own a fairly decent sized one)

Cheers @Keep Calm and Ramify, I only have one pine, and it's a two year old Japanese black pine... I doubt I can grow a white pine here in Brissie.

i'll be looking around the traps to see what's available, think it deserves a good size tree, but I don't have anything the right size in an upright formal style...

You could also put a informal upright in it as long as it has a beefy buttress. Nice pot Mel, I would keep it or you can sell it to me

Yes I think Bodhi's trident looks great, ta Kirky. I would like to do the pot justice, that's for sure.

Swampies do great in Brisbane. It's definitely tropical enough for them there. Just keep them well watered. I got all my swampies from Steve in Brisbane. He's got hundreds at his nursery.
