my custom made pot from brett arrived today.

and as i told brett i would find a tree for it. even if it was only an accent plant

luckily i had just styled a mame juniperus horizontalis and it seems the pair will be a great match. i will slowly reduce the root ball over the next two years to fit the tree. unless i'm being overly cautious?? thoughts

anyways for your veiwing pleasure an idea of the tree and pot combination

as for reducing the rootball i wouldnt want to lose the tree as it has great potential. i would be over cautious aswell, as for actually doing it i couldnt give ya any details. maybe put it in an oversized bonsai pot for now to get it used to the smaller root mass then step down after a bit?

Wow that's a very nice little tree Jarryd. I reduced the root ball considerably the other day on a juniper but that was an experiment after Tony told me they are a tough tree. I will look forward to the experts response and your tree getting into that pot.

i love the way you have taken the pic to. the background looks wicked just on dark, it gives the tree an added dimension i reckon, cant wait to see this one down the track!

Has the tree been taken out of the pot it is in??. If it has you will know what the root ball is like. If it is still as you bought from the nursery chances are you can reduce it quite a lot.
Firstly knock it out of the pot have a look at the roots, if they are a mass that are going around and under the bottom. Have a look in the centre of the root mass.
If you see the soil full of roots you have a fine root system. You will have no worries reducing it.

My bet is though there will be hardly any roots down the centre, so when you tease out the soil you will have a very reduced what is perceived as a root ball.
So again it will not be a problem to reduce it.
The nursery soil allows for the roots to run down the outside. Not down though the centre. To get the oxygen from the holes at the bottom of the pot.
Being a heavier soil than a free draining Bonsai mix it does not allow the roots to go though the soil, but around it.

Just my take on it, the first thing I do with nursery stock. Is to take it out of the soil it is in and replace it with my mix to acclimatise the plant to a good free draining mix.

pup thanks for your advice. the tree has only just been styled recently so would reducing the root ball by half and replacing in a smaller training pot then moving it to bretts pot next yr be ok ??

Thats what I would do. The other was advise if you decided to do it now, as some of the younger ones are more inclined to. Wireing and styling should be done then , give the tree achance to recover, then the potting phase.
