Hi All

I have recently caught the bonsai bug and bought my first tree (ficus rubiginosa) from someone not wanting to care for it anymore.

I am experienced in keeping plants as I keep many terrariums/vivariums/cacti but I want to get a few more interesting bonsai.

Im about 5 minutes drive from Bonsai South so getting good stock is easy, I just wanted some input on types to look into for a new comer? I have availability to have the bonsai indoors in full sun or outdoor. I would prefer something that can thrive indoors in sun, however, I understand this is a limitation and welcome anything cool outdoors too :)

Thanks!

Hi Aussieant,
Welcome and you already made the best choice for a first tree IMO. You will find all the figs available at
bonsai south plus lots of good tips from the folks there. The ficus rubignosa you have loves full sun but will also
tolerate long periods inside the house, though I like to keep them near a window. I swap mine around
often when keeping indoors but find they are healthier and grow better when outside. So basically I put then inside to enjoy
for a week tops then back in the sun. They will be OK all winter on a window sill if you have to.
In my experience the only tree hardier/easier to care for than figs is the jade[succulents].
Both are great for learning the basics of bonsai and fun to play with
Have a look through old posts here on Ausbonsai and you'll find more than great info to get you going / growing
cheers
