Hi. Everyone, I have this trident maple for 3 months and I'm thinking to make it as shohin. I delete the photo when I bought it and start cutting it. I'm thinking to cut the red mark on the tree and lift up the branch a little bit up. Ill save the first branh on the right. Can I have some advice if I'm doing it right?

Thank you

In my opinion I would cut the longer one so you effectively end up with a short s shaped tree.

A bit hard to see the shape in the second photo.
Take all pics from just above soil level and rotate the tree so we can see all sides.

I like the top image as it has nice movement and taper.

I'll take a photo and decide later what is the best thing to do. I don't want to cut anything yet until I get everyone opinion.

Thank you

Hi Ilithya,
This is one idea.
  • Red Line= I would be inclined to cut this off. I think the branch is to thick, (Red arrow). This could be done now and allow the healing to start.
Green Line= I would do a ground layer at this point. The yellow arrow shows that you already have some good flare on this part of the trunk. A ground layer would give more flare and a good root system. Leave ground layering until you see new buds in spring.
Orange Line= After the ground layer has taken you could cut back to this point, or lower, and start your Shohin tree.
