I picked this up at Bunnings several months ago as a starter/something to practice on. Its a chamaecyparis pisifera. About a week ago it started turning brown.There are a couple of green shoots appearing on the trunk.I had it wired but removed it last week when it started looking grim, any help appreciated.

Looks dead in the picture but if it is re-shooting as you say there is good hope. Are you sure this is swamp cypress? It looks a bit like a juniper to me.
In any event the best bet to start with is keep it in a semi shade sheltered position and although you should be extra carefull not to let it dry out you should also be extra careful to only water when it needs it. This will be slightly different tolerance for the juniper to the cypress as the cypress likes more water I believe.

scratch the bark, see if there is any green under there, if not it dead, sorry. i havent seen a chamaecyparis come back from something like this. that photo looks bad for the tree. i had trouble with one of these when i wired, it just didnt like it at all and carked it not no much long after.

The tree is a chamaecyparis pisifera as stated which is technically a False Cypress. Swamp Cypress is Taxodium distichum.

Common names are a bugger as so many things are wrongly called Cypress.

The tree looks deads to me.

Its still very much alive,just have to wait and see I suppose. I've moved to a more sheltered position for the time being.It was released as "Baby Blue".I ve got a healthy cutting from it if worst comes to worst.

No good news there mate. I havent seen one of these come back from this situation since - well.....never.
There may be some green bits on it - but this doesnt mean it will come back.

if it comes back it will be a miracle, i have seen false cypress with green still on the cambium but like yours brown, but they die in the situation.
