Hi All, up next from my progressions is a Shohin JBP progression. When I bought this tree is was Chuhin in size, but it was overwhelmed by its branches. It took some serious consideration to remove as much as I did. However, next winter we will begin to see why.

How I found it at the nursery:

You may have noticed some yellow plastic wedges were driven into the trunk to split it, thicken, and then create further thickening as the cambium swells to swallow the wedge. I put some sealant on this wound later on to firstly cover it, but also to help it heal over quickly. Id personally shy away from doing techniques like this, instead id grow an impressive leader for a few seasons to get the same effect; no hole, no scar.


December 2016

In December 2016 is fed and candle pruned the tree, and didn't see it again until I got back from Japan, June 2017.

I then went ahead and performed bud selection, needle pluck:



and a solid styling.



result is sparse, but it'll fill out soon enough:

Great stock to start with and a nice job refining it.

From the pic, I would like to see the foliage mass moved just a bit to the right, to centre it more - but there is not much in it either way and it is very good just how it is.

I recently got all my pots from Japan in the mail, and so proceeded to start the repotting process. I have over 100 trees so this is, understandably, a slow process.


Bigei - 20cm

The pot is Tokoname, Bigei, I bought it in Japan at the world bonsai conference. Usually pots are named after the Kiln they were fired in, and I'm not sure if the Kiln is naked after a master or not, but Bigei is very popular in the US right now, and therefore prices are up, and production is up too. There was a vendor selling almost entirely Bigei right opposite my master's table at the conference. I managed to get some great deal on Bigei, Koyo, Reiho and Yamaki pots. Bigei often does many of the same size, so with a bit of searching you could find another one of these pots. Without measuring id say its about 20 x 14 cm.

quick update, I have been working with a young guy who is fantastic with the camera, and he has been photographing my bonsai for me. We have a lot of work to do outside of snapping pics of my trees, so these photos will trickle in.

The bud have extended through spring, and the health is there but the extensions are a tad late because of repotting. Should be good to go mid december for candle pruning.

a quick update:


spring is rolling around and the candles are starting to extend on this black pine. I have been contemplating changing the styling of this tree slightly and ill show you what I mean...



this is the current front as set by the pot. I have been looking at the movement of the first half of the trunk recently, I feel I could expose not only more movement, but also more of the trunk, while improving the silhouette of the foliage. This can be achieved by move the from of the tree counter clockwise about 10 minutes, and pulling the trunk and apex down with a guy wire. This will a) expose the movement of the trunkline, b) compact the tree, and c) improve the silhouette.



Ill revisit this thought process in autumn when its time to bud select and more appropriate time for wiring.

I am not sure why but I cannot see the photo history of this thread - I actually came across it through a google search related to Shohin Japanese Elms ... go figure. Anyway - are you able to update this thread? I am interested because I have a JPB to which I may make an aggressive trunk chop in winter and this thread seems a great reference.
