Chuhin JBP Progression

:reading: Oh hi, you guys again, Lastly is a Chuhin JBP that I did spend a lot of time on, because it suffered right around candle pruning. Its still not really known why, but the older needles yellowed off at the tip (12/2016). Tt first we thought it could have been over feeding, or confidor + sun, and insects. However it recovered well.

In June 2017 I got it back and went to work, the some old rigmarole of bud select and needle pluck . This tree needs time, and nitrogen, but it'll come good, I promise.

How I found it at the nursery:

No huge cuts for this tree, but some thinking about the future and the direction of this tree was needed. It'll be baldish for a year or two while I ramify the top.

In July I repotted into another stunning Izumiya pot. You may notice old needles on the tree. some buds didn't extend over summer, so they are 2 year old buds, I left them with more needles to encourage growth, this summer they will be cut regardless. I think last year in summer I didn't see these buds, and so weren't cut, and then didn't produce and second mature flush. Lesson: cut every bud!

wow its been a long time since I have updated this thread! here is the pine now. I removed the first branch and changed the angle and made the whole thing squat. Did this in a work shop with Bjorn and it has improves 10 fold. Im looking forward to being able to repot, not that it will happen any time soon but it'll finally be at home in a pot once the change is made. Enjoy!

Nice work Matt. The tree has come along nicely in a couple of years since your original post. Do you plan to turn this bonsai into a shohin specimen in the future?

Cheers,
Hal.

Probably a bit too big to make it 20cm, I'll keep it at churn size for its entire life.
