My Ash trees are always the first to break dormancy, but this is early even for them! I was watering today and a splash of green caught my eye..
Anyone else experiencing an early Spring?

Still plenty of winter left in NE vic . -1 predicted tonight and I don't think its got over 14 for 4-5 weeks . I think this sat a unusual hot 18 predicted than back to 13 or so. That's a very nice tree . How tall is it?

I have a little Chinese elm that started budding a couple weeks ago... found it quite odd haha

I heard a Blackbird singing the other evening. A Boobook owl as well. That tells me they are ready for action. My Chinese quince is always the first and it's well under way. The Ash is still in bed..
I see yours is starting to bark up on the primary branches!

Yeah. Chinese elms burst 3 weeks ago - 3 weeks early, and caught me by surprise. They are usually the first to open - but not until this week (last week of July).
Quince are well on their way.
Even had a couple of tridents go too.
Then yesterday I noticed 2 JBP's opening VERY early.

I have Elms, Japonica and hawthorn budding now as well. Very early and the winter has been colder than last year. Today was very warm, and I think the shock warmth and the rain in Melbourne kickstarts for the trees with genetics from colder climates.

We've had a mild and dry winter here in Adelaide so I'm not surprised everything is a bit early. However every year this tree seems to catch me out.

Matthew - the tree is about 30cm tall.

Mike - every few years I do the sphagnum wrap technique (lightly score the bark and wrap with damp sphagnum moss over summer). I've been working my way up the tree! When I first dug the tree up only the first section of the lower trunk was kept so most of the aged bark was created while in the pot.
