I bought this Juniper back in 2014, I was a new to the hobby and working on an advanced tree was a crazy idea. Back then, I didn't like Junipers to the point that I was giving them away to other club members. But I love what I see in the internet about Juniper bonsai. I gave it a shot again and learned more.

For the last 3years apex died on me 3 times until I decided last year that i'll get rid of it and build a new one using a developed back branch to become the new leader.

This year, I thinned the tree back to grow new shoots and back bud. My branching technique is not the proper or traditional way. I just think about nature and how heavy the snow is, that pulls the branches down.

These are the before and after photos.

Hi pjames , now that is a very nice bonsai love the movement in that trunk . Rules and guidelines are there to help so they say but I have never read the rules ,

I believe rules are meant to be broken as in mother nature , there's not to many cookie cutter tree's in the wild except in plantation tree's

Thanks Alpine. I totally agree. That's how I do my styling. I think about calamities like strong winds, snow storm, etc. I imagine how the branches finds light again and start growing. Finally, I add art into the equation.

I haven't done any shari yet to this tree. I will practice more before I do this.

are the trunks hard to bend when their 20 odd mm or do i need to get one of those vice bendy screwy thingy ma-bobs

They are bent when they are still young and while you can. There are some advance technique you can find online on how to bend heavy trunks of pines and junipers. With this tree, the trunk is already twisted when I first bought it.
