on friday my mate and i went to bonsai australia grower for a spending trip i was happy to find this sargent juniper to work on. after a long day we arived home on dark and i sketched up my plan for this tree before heading to bed. the next morning i comenced styling after spending a night mentally styling the tree, after 4 hours of carefull silk fiber carving by hand and branch selection the image was revealed. i'd like to share the results of this work.

beautiful design and excellent work jarryd!!! very inspiring. this as good as it gets! i so look forward to this one in future. what are the dimensions? thankyou for sharing

i agree with antonio there mate, excellent design, i am just wondering though, and tell me if i am out of place but that small bit of foliage growing on the bottom right, is that necessary? to me the tree looks great but i think that little tuft is a bit out of place, but thats just my opinion mate. great work

Really nice work Jarryd. Yeah horses for courses, i like the little bit of foliage at the bottom. Just goes to show, we are all different

well thats it bod. it was just my opinion i can just see it flowing better without it, my eye got caught there for a second when looking over the tree.
i do find the tree quite pleasing though it is good work, i cant wait to see further refinement

Hey Jarryd some one told me you where getting good Now I see why
You are going to have to show me how to carve like that when I finally get up there. Can you explain silk fiber carving a little is that just very thin strips of wood removed each time?
Also can you point out where you got the new leader from in the unstyled image I can't find it even comparing the styled tree with the raw stock

ant the tree is probably about 25- 30 cm now

jamie when i can i will post the original sketch i drew before styling and hopefully it will reveal my vision for this tree a bit better.

brett i did a 5 second sketch in paint to explain to you the styling process. a picture says a thousand words, in regards to the silk fibre carving, i am a complete novis it is a technique i have copyed from artist cheng cheng kung and is also know as shari sidiao. here is the link to his site, he is a masterful bonsai artist be sure to check out the taiwan bonsai exhibitors gallery aswell. the process involves stripping the wood whilst still fresh so as to reveal the contours and natural lines and movement of the trunk.

blue shows branches removed.
yellow is banches kept.
red x's indicate foliage mass used

cool mate, sounds good. like i said its a great design i just cant see the need for that little bit down there. am looking forward to seeing your vision and what you make of it

I think I am starting to see it Jarryd. That branch on the right is folded back to make use of the outer foliage to make a pad at the moment?

Jarryd this is going to be a stunner in the future. What is always said. Good stock good tree. Plus a good artist a very good tree.

Beginners take note! Here is a good example of designing a tree in proportion with it's trunk caliper, from plant material that is readily available.
