This is a Maple type tree that I pass from time to time, and a few days ago I took some cuttings from it.
We don't get many classically deciduous trees doing well in Brisbane, so I decided to try and propagate from it.
A quick search indicates it may be a liquidambar, but the bark doesn't look quite right. The leaves were a deep purple colour before they dropped.
Any ideas? Are cuttings likely to take?

Looks like liquidamber from here. Picture 3 shows buds are alternate whereas maples have opposite buds.
Another giveaway is the smell. Try crushing a leaf or twig. Liquidamber has a distinctive smell.
Also check for seed pods. Liquidamber has spiky balls about 3cm diameter. If there's none on the tree there may still be some on the ground nearby.

I was not aware of this so I have put cuttings in and grown trees from them. I'll have to remember not to do it in future

The bark looks good for LA I think. There are several species which may explain the discrepancy with online pictures.

Thanks everyone. Liquidambar it is. I'll keep you updated on the success or failure of my cuttings.
I'll also check for seed pods and leaf smell next time I pass the tree.
