I've seen it before, but I don't know the name, sorry.
As far as what you can do with it... it's very small, so in the correct season, I'd suggest you put it in a nice big grow box, or in the garden and fatten it up!

It'll be fine, but it'll grow very slowly and stay looking like a seedling instead of like a small tree (which is kinda the point of Bonsai

)

it looks like a jacaranda or poinciana, it definately needs to be repotted for sure, i think you would be able to slip pot this into something bigger with out a drama now. if you dont disturbed the roots it wont be a problem.

Could be in the jacaranda family or robina is another possibility.
Not sure why these guys are telling you to repot it. Looks fine and it is risky repotting a tree of this type at the moment?

my opinion on repotting is not as such repotting, like in bare rooting and replacing the soil etc. it is a slip potting, which shouldnt be a problem getting it into a bigger grow pot or box to let the litte fella strech its legs and grow some size, to be completely honest with out being derogotry( i dont think thats how its spelt but i hope you all know what i mean) this little one to me from what i can see is a seedling that needs to grow, grow, grow.
just my opinion though. correct me if i am wrong

In my opinion it is an Acacia (wattle) of some sort.

Chris,
even thought you may not want to take it out of the bonsai pot, if you did and put it in a growing box you will be impressed with the results.
I use the foam friut boxes you get from the friut shop they work a treat.

Bigger is not always better. There is a certain size pot that will give the best growth results. The size of this pot looks fine for now. With a tree this small there is a good chance that when slip potting the soil just falls away from the immature root ball that has not filled the pot.
The tree looks healthy and quite small for this pot so why muck around with it? But be careful with under and over watering the soil under those rocks looks a little organic to me. Make sure you look under the rocks before watering to make sure you know what is going on with the soil.
I think Acacia is most probable now it has been mentioned.
