Unexpanded perlite

My local club just bought a stash of potting mix materials.

One of the products is unexpanded perlite. There doesn't seem to be much on the net about its horticultural properties. Apart from being a good particle size (1-4m), does it have any special horticultural benefits that make better it than similar sized sand or gravel?

I have it available and usually in stock and is a product from Ausperl here in Sydney
I have discussed it at length with the staff there and they have advised that chemically it is identical to Pumice and holds a similar amount of water.
