Went on a Olive dig with the SA Bonsai Society yesterday. Despite the rain and hail it was quite arewarding morning. Thanks to Matt S for the advice.

Cheers mate, that was the stand out to me as well....until it was time to drag it up the hill back to the car!

Now you can look forward to picking these up and turning the pots every couple of weeks for the rest of your life. Every few years you'll need to lift the tree out of the pot and hold it while trimming the roots. If you want to show them they need to be carried to the car, to the venue and back each time.
If it's too big to lug up a hill its too big for a bonsai...
Remember you may be young and strong now but trust me, that does no last forever

As I get older I find myself agreeing more and more with Neil's points about bonsai size, very true.
However I found another solution for the big-ish trees I still love and can't carry
1. permanent residence [they don't leave my back yard, ever]
2, large turn tables
3, strong mates to help when collecting, repotting etc. Only expense is the beverages required to water them [mates not trees]
What I am amazed by is it looks like you flat bottomed the big one with a hand saw
My shoulder is hurting just thinking about it.
The second pic is a beauty. Should it out grow you I could squeeze it onto my benches no problem

What type of olives are they?

Where abouts in sa did you collect them?

I dug these Olives as part of an organised dig with the Adelaide Bonsai Society in the Onkaparinga Gorge National Park. The club had permission from the parks authority to collect olive trees with strick rules to look after the environment. Not sure what part of town you live in but the Sturt Gorge has plenty of olives and ash trees that they are poisoning off all the time so I have a few from there as well.
