The first two - a rhododendron?

The leaves and the stems of the first look very much like azalea. There are some azalea varieties that have highly modified flowers like this. I have one satsuki that's just starting to flower now with similar flowers.

I'd say the 2nd one is Liriodendron - tulip tree. A good shot of the entire leaf will confirm.

Hi Shibui , at first glance prior to flowering it looked like a small leafed azalea , multi clump at around 1.5 metres high and 50mm trunks , some of the leaves have elongated now , but it is definately and azalea of some sort . Any pics of your plant in flower ?

Unfortunately the leaf pic didn't load correctly but i can assume you are correct with the tulip tree.

The flowers are not in such good shape here and this is the best photo I can manage with low light Buds on the larger plant have not unfurled yet but they do have that twisted shape similar to the one in your shot. Mine came from Bonsai Art and was labelled Satsuki azalea 'Kinsai'. There are other azaleas that have similar flowers which are known as 'spider' shape.

Hi Shibui , a quick google on Satsuki Azalea Kinsai definitely show the identical flower . Thanks for the for the I.D .

I'm sure I can get a layer or trunk from the original plant along with plenty of other species in his new 5 acre garden

I must say AlpineArt, I do get envious when I read your posts. Amazing stock and creativity in your own approach, heaps of land, mates with acreage. I wish! I’ll make do with my twigs and pre-bonsai sticks in my 8*10 courtyard.

I will make good my threat of passing by your way one day - I’d love to see some of your Bonsai.

Hi MJL, Arnold is a bit like me , doesn't have the time to look after it so I might just have to do some gardening for him or be it supervise a work crew .

Here's the kinsai flower (actually half a flower. I think someone has eaten a few petals) Cuttings strike really easily. These are just 1 yo and already flowering. Growth habit of this var seems to be very long and straight stems but the quickest growing of the satsukis I have at the moment. It will need plenty of pruning and wiring to make good shaped trunks and branches but flowers are very unusual.

Hi Shibui , It would be interesting to see if a tall trunk back buds , the base on Arnold's specimen is huge , I'm hoping to split a nice piece off. Closer inspection is required but its easy digging .
