Help with shrub

I've had to remove this 2m shrub from the front to make way for a driveway. I managed to dig up and pot a sapling from it about 6 months ago. I'm wondering if it would make a decent bonsai, but doubt it as the leaves are huge.
Any idea what it is?

I'll have a guess and say Gardenia?
I've not tried as bonsai, but I love the flower fragrance.

Hi Redsonic , mate looks like a Gardenia Radicans , yes the leaves are big but they do work as bonsai in my book . I have a topic here with the same species or be it a large leafed variety showing the progression so far ..

Cheers . Alpine

I don't recall ever seeing bunches of buds like this?

I understood radicans to be a smaller dwarf variety?
Mines tiny leaves to about 2cms only.

Gardenia perfume is a give away though, both large and small varieties appear to have the same sublime smell.

definitely Gardenia of some sort. There are dwarf-ish varieties that are used for bonsai, but not sure if this large leafed variety is one of them...

Thanks again to the brains trust!
I will persevere with the little tree I potted up. If it doesn't work out as a bonsai, I will plant it somewhere in the garden to make up for the parent plant I had to remove.
