Maple - mottled leaves

These leaves are on a mature Japanese maple bonsai. None of my other maples ( bonsai or garden) have these symptoms.

This tree was defoliated this season; none of the others were defoliated.

I suspect a fungal disease, not deficiencies.

Hi SteveW,

I hope you find an answer - as a lover of Japanese Maples, I am interested in any answers too. I just searched the forum for threads about this and there are a number - indeed, I hadn’t read them before and now I dread growing this plants! Here I was thinking they are relatively easy to grow - but alas not - they are susceptible to variety of issues.

While not Bonsai related - perhaps this link will help http://japanesemaplelovers.com/japanese-maple-diseases/

It’s an informative read - maybe your plant has Verticillium Wilt? Not sure.

I too will be interested in any thoughts. Good luck.

Mark

Thanks for the link Mark. I've sprayed it with Triflorine and will keep researching.

Btw - maples are easy to grow and very rewarding. Grow some seed from the dissectum ones - some of the seedlings do fine on their own roots, or airlay some to get a head start on a thick trunk.
